I write about hydrogen energy the way I learned it — from the inside of the equipment, not from a whiteboard. For more than two decades I’ve worked across hydrogen technology and water treatment, and that combination turned out to matter more than I expected: most of the hard problems in hydrogen production live right at the boundary between the two.

Where This Started

My path into hydrogen began when I was engaged by Bill Ross — a hydrogen pioneer and documented electrolyzer inventor holding both Canadian and U.S. patents dating back to 1979 — to help solve a persistent problem: carryover contamination in electrolyzer output. My water treatment background turned out to be exactly what that problem needed, and it’s shaped how I’ve approached hydrogen systems ever since.

One field incident from 2002 stuck with me: an HHO unit’s impurity carryover led directly to an ambulance throttle body failure. It’s a small, concrete example of something I come back to often in my writing — in hydrogen systems, purity isn’t a detail. It’s the difference between equipment that works and equipment that fails in the field.
